Board told to update student handbook and discipline matrix referenced in policies

Deming Public Schools staff told the board Oct. 9 that several policy advisories refer to the district's administrative handbook and the student code of conduct and that the district should update and standardize the handbook material.

Board members said they had difficulty locating some handbook materials on the website and asked staff to collate the student code of conduct, discipline matrix and other handbook exhibits. Staff said the handbook items have been in place and that the discipline matrix exists, but agreed the web materials need updating and standardization.
Staff proposed a project to review the current handbook, gather input from parents, principals and community stakeholders where required by policy, and then present a clean, standardized handbook or regulation aligned with the policies for board review and possible action.
The presenter said the student-code-of-conduct references in policy do not necessarily require formal board approval but the board may review recommended handbook changes; staff will work to have a report and proposed updates available for future meetings.
