District briefed on new safety requirements: AEDs and water-safety notices

District staff briefed the Deming board on two safety-related legislative changes: a requirement to install and maintain automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in schools, and a requirement to provide parents with information about water safety.
Why it matters: AED availability and maintenance affect emergency response in school facilities; informing families about water safety is a state-mandated notification requirement.
Staff said the law requires high schools to have at least one AED by the 2026–27 school year and elementary and middle schools to have at least one by the 2027–28 school year; the district already has AEDs in larger sites such as high schools and at athletic trainer stations. The board discussed placement options (for example, gym and front office locations), routine maintenance and battery/charger replacement, and liability concerns if equipment is not maintained.
Separately, staff noted a legislative requirement to provide parents with information about water-safety resources; the district must direct parents to information but may not be asked to certify providers. Staff said the policy-advisory language will include a legal disclaimer limiting district endorsement of outside instruction or providers.
Staff told the board the district will assemble a plan to locate, maintain and train staff on AEDs, estimate costs and coordinate procurement and maintenance schedules, and will ensure the water-safety notification language required by statute is added to district communications.
