Building codes: September permits, inspections and school facilities collections reported; director signals 2024 I-Codes adoption ahead

Tonya Veil, director of the Building Codes Department, presented the department's September activity report and advised the committee about an upcoming proposed code adoption.
Veil said the department issued 378 permits in September; 36 were primary single-family dwellings (a year-over-year decrease: 118 single-family permits in the same month last year). The office performed 1,772 building inspections and drove just under 10,000 miles for field inspections. Permit revenue for the month was $153,541.05.
Veil reported school facilities-tax receipts of $491,795.50 for the month, bringing the fiscal-year cumulative total to about $1.9 million; development-tax receipts included one $750 payment. The committee approved the monthly report by voice vote.
Veil also advised commissioners she is preparing to propose adoption of the 2024 International Building Code series and that the county must stay within seven years of the newest printed edition. She said staff plans to coordinate with nearby municipalities and the Home Builders Association and expects to present ordinance language for two readings (November and December) with an anticipated effective date in late winter prior to the 2026 spring building season.
