Committee approves application for TDOT transportation planning grant to study corridor

County staff received committee permission to apply for a TDOT planning grant (up to $250,000; 10% local match) to study corridor improvements along Armstrong Valley and Midland roads and other corridors.
The committee authorized county staff to apply for a Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Transportation Planning Grant to pursue corridor and mobility planning work across the county.
Assistant County Engineer for Construction Jared Bonar told the committee the TDOT grant offers up to $250,000 with a 10% local match (maximum $25,000). Bonar said a corridor study would examine Armstrong Valley Road, Midland Road and segments between city limits and the Bedford County line, and could identify potential geometric improvements, stop signs, signal needs and resurfacing priorities.
Committee members asked whether multiple projects could be combined in a single application; Bonar said TDOT will determine award amounts and that it would be prudent to focus on a single corridor for the first application to build county experience. The committee moved, seconded and approved the county'as application to TDOT; staff said any award would come back to the committee before acceptance.
Bonar said the grant application window opened Sept. 2 and awards are announced around December, with work beginning in January if awarded. The county will return to the committee before accepting an award and before beginning any corridor work.
