District boundary review committee redraws maps to county lines, plans further analysis

The Albany County School District #1 Board of Trustees received an update from the district boundary adjustment committee on proposed school attendance‑zone changes and next steps.

Facilities coordinator Randy Wilkerson told the board that the committee produced a new draft that redraws school boundaries out to county lines, an effort intended to clarify where students attend school. “Our boundaries were never drew, drew out to the county lines… I am the happiest person in the world,” a committee member said during the briefing.

Wilkerson and committee members said they combined multiple scenarios and adjusted lines because of localized enrollment trends: Linford and Indian Paintbrush elementary enrollments are trending downward, Spring Creek is steady and Slate is rising. The committee will run the draft boundaries against current student addresses and demographic projections and share results with trustees before the next meeting.

Trustees stressed the committee is aiming to plan carefully rather than implement changes immediately. “We don't want to do this if it doesn't need to be done,” one trustee said, noting the community has experienced substantial change and that the district does not need to act at once. Committee leaders said the typical implementation approach would allow current upper‑grade cohorts (for example, a fifth‑grade class) to finish the year at their school rather than immediately move students, but final implementation details were not set.

Wilkerson said the committee includes trustees, elementary principals and PTO presidents; the board asked staff to provide clearer committee membership and meeting schedules in the coming weeks. The group will meet again after staff run the draft maps through current enrollment and program data; administrators expect another round of discussion before any public hearings or formal proposals to the board.
