Summary
Chevron told the El Segundo City Council the cause of an Oct. 2 refinery fire is unknown and under investigation by the company and Cal/OSHA. City Manager Daryl George said the South Coast Air Quality Management District received 54 odor complaints and issued two notices of violation related to Hyperion since Oct. 7.
El Segundo City Council on Oct. 21 heard from Chevron and city officials about recent industrial incidents and air-quality complaints.
Refinery director Bridal Stock said the cause of the Oct. 2 fire at a refinery facility remains unknown and that the company and Cal/OSHA are investigating. Bridal Stock also told the council that the specific facility where the fire occurred remains offline, while the refinery as a whole is still producing transportation fuel.
City Manager Daryl George later updated the council on complaints tied to Hyperion. George said the South Coast Air Quality Management District received 54 odor complaints and issued two notices of violation for nuisance odors since the Oct. 7 council meeting. City materials directing residents to more information were posted at elsagundo.org/hyperion, George said.
Council members did not take a separate formal vote on the refinery statement during the meeting; the Chevron representatives presented information as an update. No new mitigation measures or regulatory actions were announced on Oct. 21.
The update followed several public and staff presentations and came amid other agenda items on public facilities and event planning.
