Council authorizes legal review and declaratory process for ProBuild/Builders First Source abatements

Mooresville Town Council on Oct. 7 authorized legal counsel to prepare a declaratory judgment and begin the public-notice steps needed to consider tax abatements for a local building supply business identified as Builders First Source (ProBuild).
Staff said the project qualifies for both real and personal property abatements under the town's matrix and estimated the company's new real property investment at about $6.4 million and additional personal property at about $2.1 million. The council voted to authorize legal counsel to proceed with the declaratory step and to set a future public hearing and confirmatory action as required by the town's abatement process. The motion carried 5-0.
Council members and staff described Builders First Source/ProBuild as a long-standing local business with roots under previous names; the company indicated it would not attend the Oct. 7 meeting.
Why it matters: If the abatement process proceeds and the council ultimately approves, the company's investments could increase the town's industrial or commercial tax base. The council's vote triggers legal and public-notice steps but does not itself grant an abatement.
