Central York SD schedules K–12 health, PE and driver’s-ed rewrites; business and CTE courses planned

Central York School District staff told the curriculum committee on Oct. 6 that the district will undertake a major curriculum-writing year for health, physical education and driver’s education (K–12) and will also complete several business and career-and-technical-education course updates.
Dr. Uchak, a district staff member, said the health/PE/driver’s-ed work is a “big year” and that department staff and volunteers will write during the school year to allow more teachers to participate. “We share kind of the dates with them, and then if we get enough people volunteering, who wants to be involved, most of the…teachers have wanted to be involved,” Dr. Uchak said.
What the committee was told
- Health, physical education and driver’s education (K–12) will be the district’s primary curriculum-writing focus this year. - Four business courses will be written: two during the school year and two in the summer. - An Education 3 course (to continue the district’s CTE education sequence after Education 1 and 2) will be written this year. - A previously postponed social-studies course — College and High School Western Civ II, a second-semester course that had insufficient enrollment last year — will be written this fall so the teacher is not pulled from instruction again.
Scheduling and teacher participation
Staff said they expect to begin work around Oct. 20–27 and to use parent-teacher conference days and a professional-development day to schedule teacher writers, citing a model used successfully last year for art and music. Staff emphasized the district’s intent not to prevent a teacher from meeting with parents, instructing teachers to step away for conferences if scheduled during writing sessions.
Implementation notes and next steps
- The health/PE/driver’s-ed timeline was not yet finalized; staff planned to meet with departmental leadership to finalize dates. - The district will present curriculum maps and draft courses to the committee during the school year rather than concentrating the workload in summer months.
