Hollidaysburg staff reports building permits, community tree planting and new businesses; farmers market season wraps

Hollidaysburg's community development staff reported issuing 30 permits in September, investigating 30 complaints and closing 17 cases, Director of Community Development Andy Haynes told council.
Haynes said of the 30 complaints, 16 were property maintenance violations, nine zoning violations, four were work without permits and one involved a dumpster at apartments. The department also announced a partnership with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to plant 58 trees in the Holiday Hill community as the first step of a tree-planting initiative; planning is scheduled over two days in October and one in November, and volunteers were asked to sign up.
Staff highlighted two recently opened businesses: Walraize Bagel Company at 411 South Union Street and Moonlight Crystal and Gems at 911 Scotch Valley Road; CareLab is expected to open at 201 Wayne Street in November, and Deanna County Group at 412 Union Street. Staff also reported the farmers market had a successful season with as many as 22 events and thanked sponsors.
Ending: Department staff encouraged residents to avoid placing signs in public rights-of-way, to support local businesses, and to volunteer for upcoming seasonal events.
