Council reviews opioid settlement spending plan; Tall Cop assessment, prevention funding and scheduling discussed

At the Oct. 8 meeting, Sawyer County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council members reviewed the county’s plan to allocate opioid settlement funds and related grants for prevention, jail health and recovery services.
Staff summarized past decisions to allocate roughly $100,000 per year to the county’s opioid response for multiple years and provided a spending template showing how funds have been and will be used. Staff said the Vital Strategies grant and opioid settlement funds are supporting a portion of the jail‑nurse position (the transcript indicated opioid funds will supplement 50% of the nurse’s time). Marketing and communications work (FinDEN), AmeriCorps peer recovery coach support and public‑health staffing were also listed as funded activities.
Staff estimated that after planned allocations there would be roughly $23,000 remaining for prevention activities, plus an additional federal prevention allocation of about $12,500 expected to supplement school and prevention work. Staff emphasized continued presence in schools as a priority and said the Tall Cop community assessment (scheduled Nov. 12) would likely inform 2026 prevention strategy.
Council members discussed scheduling for Tall Cop and the Reaching Rural site visit (now set for the week of Nov. 12). Staff said Tall Cop could deliver a four‑hour presentation and that stakeholders should coordinate attendance; depending on timing, the CJCC may need to adjust meeting times or plans for Nov. 12 to avoid quorum conflicts with other community events.
Staff said a midyear timing for the Vital Strategies grant complicated calendar alignment but that current funding levels allow continuity of programs. No formal budget adoption or amendment was voted during the meeting; staff framed the presentation as an update and planning discussion.
