Secondary roads crew finishes Broadway (Ordway) Road timber-deck replacement; seal coat scheduled

Cathy Nicholas reported to the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors on Oct. 7 that crews completed replacement of an aging timber deck on the Broadway Road (Ordway Road) bridge and are waiting for a contractor to apply a seal coat before reopening the structure.
"We did want to replace the timber deck," Nicholas said, describing the bridge as the county's only timber-deck structure. She told the board the deck was originally a timber deck from the 1950s and was damaged during a cleanout operation. The replacement uses glued-laminated (glulam) beams formed into slabs, set on new pier caps and protected around steel H-piles with metal forms filled to shield the waterline from corrosion.
Nicholas said the bridge is a three-span structure with each span about 26 feet long and roughly 13 feet wide. County crews have completed the structural work and hired a contractor, identified in the meeting as a railroad construction firm, to place a seal coat on the deck. "We are hoping that that will be done by the end of next week," she said. When asked about longevity, Nicholas said the county does not typically seal bridge decks but expects perhaps 10 years of life from the seal coat while noting uncertainty: "We don't really — we don't seal many of our bridge decks. We are hoping to get maybe 10 years out of the seal coat."
