The Green River City Council read and approved proclamations recognizing October observances: Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Fire Prevention Week.
The council recognized October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and encouraged community awareness of screening, early detection, diagnosis and treatment. The proclamation cited a 2024 estimate of about 310,721 invasive breast cancer diagnoses among women in the United States and noted that approximately 1 in 8 women (13.1 percent) will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in her lifetime.
Mayor Pete Russ read a proclamation naming October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Green River and called on citizens to support local services and survivors. The proclamation noted national statistics about intimate-partner violence and announced that the local YWCA will host a Purple Glow Run/Walk, a family-friendly 5K with a memorial and Silent Witness display, on Oct. 17, 2025, at 6:30 p.m.
The council also proclaimed Oct. 5–11 as Fire Prevention Week and highlighted this year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-ion batteries in your home.” The proclamation urged residents to plan and practice home fire escape routes, learn safe charging and disposal practices for lithium-ion batteries and ensure fire-safety plans include those with sensory or physical disabilities.
Ending: The proclamations were read into the record with no public debate recorded; the council did not take further actions tied to the proclamations during the meeting.
