Baker council issues proclamations, honors residents and local organizations

The City of Baker City Council on Oct. 14 presented several proclamations and recognitions, including a proclamation honoring resident and cancer survivor Sarah Holiday James and a declaration of October 2025 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The council also recognized Baker High School———————Symphony of Soul for placing third in the small band division at Southern University———————High School Battle of the Bands, observed October as ADHD Awareness Month and heard from Miranda Georgetown Riley, founder of the Magnolia Rose Foundation for Autism Acceptance, about the foundation———————and its upcoming Gatsby Gala.
Sarah Holiday James, introduced by the mayor and presented with a proclamation, described her long fight with cancer and urged regular health checks. "I try to make it look easy, but it's not easy," James said, and encouraged residents to get physicals and screenings. City leaders noted James———————and her family———————as examples of resilience during October——————————Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Councilwoman Desiree Collins read a declaration marking October as ADHD Awareness Month and described how ADHD can persist into adulthood. Collins said the month is an opportunity "to break the stigma" and promote resources and support for adults and children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Baker High School band director Guy Kent and student leaders introduced the Symphony of Soul after the council issued a public recognition noting the band———————placed third in its division. Kent, who identified himself as the high school———————band director, said the recognition gives students local visibility and thanked the community for support.
Miranda Georgetown Riley, founder of the Magnolia Rose Foundation for Autism Acceptance, told the council the foundation will hold its fourth annual Magnolia Masquerade Gatsby Gala on Nov. 1, 8 p.m. to midnight, at the Baker municipal center. She said proceeds support sensory-friendly play dates, a resource fair and family support programs for children ages 0———————to 12.
Also at the meeting, newly elected Judge Vicki Jones briefly introduced herself to the council and attendees after the council presented a recognition.
Smaller acknowledgments included officials thanking public works staff for recent ditch- and right-of-way maintenance and noting free community resources available through the Baker Recreation Department.
The council voted to adopt at least one of the proclamations during the meeting; other recognitions were presented without additional formal action recorded in the transcript.
The council's recognitions and community announcements highlighted local volunteer efforts, school extracurricular achievements and nonprofit fundraising plans that organizers said will benefit families and children in Baker.
