Council approves memorial garden around Miracle League memorial tree

Volunteers from the Miracle League, including Sandra Bass and Daryl Heckman, described a plan to add a landscaped border around the existing memorial plaque and to place sponsor-supported rocks with names of honored athletes beneath the tree. They said the project would be privately funded and would not require town appropriations. The Miracle League reported it served 75 athletes this year, an increase of about 30 athletes from the prior season.
Council members discussed conflict-of-interest concerns because one councilor volunteers with the Miracle League. The town attorney advised that a volunteer role does not constitute a conflict of interest absent private gain, and the councilor was permitted to vote. The council took a formal vote and approved the garden project.
