The council approved procurement resolutions authorizing annual purchases of water‑treatment chemicals — Caris 8,700 corrosion inhibitor, hydrated lime, lime slurry and fluoride (hydrofluorosilicic acid) — from designated sole‑source distributors as budgeted.
Staff said Caris corrosion inhibitor procurement is estimated at $360,000 annually and that hydrated lime, lime slurry and fluoride purchases together are estimated at $200,000 annually; those are routine annual procurements for the water department. The council approved the items through the consent agenda.
Mayor Sherry Sullivan said she intends to evaluate the possibility of removing fluoride from the city’s water system over the next several years, noting other Alabama systems have removed it and that Fairhope currently spends roughly $80,000–$100,000 annually on fluoride. She said staff will work with the local dental community as part of the evaluation and report findings back to council.
Procurements for the listed chemicals were approved as budgeted.
