Community Foundation gives $50,000; council selects WAS Design to advance Foundation Park plans

The council approved Mayor Sherry Sullivan’s selection of W.A.S. Design to provide Phase 1 landscape architecture services for Foundation Park at the HOPE Community and received a $50,000 installment from the Community Foundation of Point Clear and South Alabama toward a pledged minimum of $100,000.
Mayor Sullivan and Rebecca Byrne of the Community Foundation explained the park will include a splash pad, playground, seating and a walking trail on the Twin Beach and Section Street site. Byrne said the foundation has begun fundraising and committed at least $100,000 in support, with $50,000 presented to the city at the meeting and the balance to follow before year end.
Council’s resolution authorizes the mayor to negotiate a not-to-exceed fee with W.A.S. Design for Phase 1 that must be approved by council. Staff said conceptual work with W.A.S. had already begun and the action will allow the city to expend donated funds to pay for the design work.
“Part of our commitment with our partnership is to provide at least $100,000 before the end of the year,” Byrne said. The council approved the selection and authorized negotiation of the fee.
