Mayor Mario Garza signed a proclamation Tuesday declaring October 2025 National Breast Cancer Awareness Month for the City of San Juan.
Carlo Briones, an oncologist at DHR Health, addressed the commission and emphasized the importance of screening, saying breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and that "around 1 in 8 women will develop this cancer in a lifetime." He told commissioners that early detection through mammography can catch disease at a curable stage and that DHR Health is running a $99 mammogram special for the community; he provided a contact number for appointments: (956) 362-7503.
The proclamation, read into the record by the mayor, cites mammography as the single most effective screening method and recognizes the efforts of DHR physicians, nurses and Advanced Care Center staff. It notes that more than 2.5 million Americans are breast cancer survivors and honors those currently coping with the disease. After the reading, Garza signed the proclamation and commissioners and attendees applauded.
The presentation included a request that the community keep those affected by breast cancer in their thoughts and prayers and a brief photo opportunity after the signing.
The proclamation was ceremonial; no formal vote was required to read or sign it.
