Board OKs Safe Routes to School grant application to expand bike and walking safety programs

The committee authorized Milwaukee Public Schools to apply for a Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin Safe Routes to School grant to expand bicycle and walking safety programs, including a newly added high school component.
Superintendent Brenda Cassellius told the committee the administration originally planned a $607,300 request with a $121,460 local match but expanded the proposal to broaden the district's high school programming. "With this addition, we are now seeking approval to submit an application totaling $735,800 with a required match of $147,160," Cassellius said.
The board voted 5-0 to approve the administration's request to submit the grant application. The motion was moved by Director Zombor and carried on a roll call vote: Director Herndon — Aye; Director Jackson — Aye; Director Reza — Aye; Director Zombor — Aye; Chair Cheryl O'Halloran — Aye.
Ending: The administration may submit the competitive grant application and, if awarded, will return with implementation details and required matching funds.
