Commissioners approve CZ 15-20-25 rezoning despite safety concerns at Old Dover Road intersection

Commissioner Gallant moved the approval and Commissioner Joe Smith seconded. The discussion included safety concerns for the intersection at Old Dover Road and U.S. Highway 79.
"I just don't think it's wise to add more houses right now before that intersection in the Papa Rocks area is addressed," Commissioner Burkholder said, urging colleagues to vote against the rezoning because of the hazardous conditions at the crossing.
Commissioner Harper said his earlier questions about the site and its connection to existing subdivisions had been answered and he had no reason to oppose the rezoning.
After limited additional discussion, the commission voted. The county clerk announced the result as 13 yeses, 4 nos, 0 abstentions.
The jurisdiction did not include additional traffic mitigation requirements on the record at the time of the vote. Any developer obligations, conditions or required roadway improvements were not specified in the hearing record.
