Summary
Two residents shared personal stories at the Oct. 20 council meeting urging support for a school levy on the Nov. 4 ballot, and council members encouraged voters to be informed and participate.
Two Farmington residents used the council's public-comment period on Oct. 20 to urge support for an upcoming School District 192 levy referendum on Nov. 4, describing how district programs and services benefited their children.
Nicole Colson of 19235 Everest Path said she and her family have put down roots in Farmington and are "voting yes for the schools because of the opportunities they offer students, families, and fans of our teams, our programs, and activities." Colson described the schools as "the heartbeat of the city" and said the district's programs helped her family after a personal loss.
Sarah Rice of 409 Ninth Street described her daughter's educational journey and credited local public schools for supporting her daughter's progress and social opportunities. Rice said she initially chose private schooling for special-needs services but later enrolled her daughter in district schools and saw academic and social improvement. "She came in sixth grade years behind in reading and math. She's an advanced math now. She reads advanced texts for fun," Rice said.
During roundtable, Council member Jake encouraged residents to be informed voters and noted information is available on the school district's website and social channels. Council members framed the referendum as a local decision and asked residents to vote on or before Nov. 4.
No council action on the referendum occurred at the meeting; public comments were recorded for the official minutes.
