Highland mayor signs Constitution Week proclamation after DAR presentation

Representatives of the Pony Express chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented a Constitution Week proclamation to the Highland City Council and asked the mayor to sign it in recognition of the 238th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution.
Gail Keeler, regent of the Pony Express DAR chapter, told the council the organization focuses on historic preservation, education and patriotism and urged residents to read and reflect on the Constitution. Keeler said the chapter donated more than 3,600 pocket Constitutions to local fifth- and tenth-grade classes and that teachers reported using them in lessons. "In keeping with these purposes, we encourage all Americans to read the Constitution, reflect on it, and be grateful for it," Keeler said during the presentation.
Mayor Kurt Oster signed the proclamation during the meeting and invited the council and DAR representatives to pose for photographs. The proclamation designates September 17 through the 20th as Constitution Week and asks residents to honor the framers and the document's protections. Keeler and vice regent Laurie Volmar were present for the signing.
The council placed the proclamation in the city library and recorded the recognition in the meeting minutes.
