The Warren County Board of Supervisors on Oct. 21 voted to vacate about a 620-foot section of Jewell Street (east of S 31), concluding that the segment functions as a private drive and serves a single parcel.
During a public hearing, county staff described the section as a dead-end that “goes right down the middle of one parcel and it serves one household,” and said the parcel retains frontage on S 31. The county said repeated obstructions — vehicles, campers and similar impediments — have made routine maintenance difficult, and previous coordinated maintenance efforts required extra resources.
Staff said the roadway vacation is being initiated by the county (not requested by the property owner) because the county has been unable to maintain the road and the segment effectively operates as private driveway access to a single residence. No members of the public spoke during the hearing.
A supervisor moved to vacate the described section of Jewell Street; the motion carried on a roll-call vote. Staff recorded that approximately 620 feet of roadway was vacated as a result of the motion.
The board noted that notices and letters had been circulated by the county attorney and sheriff’s office previously regarding parking and maintenance problems on the road. The vacation will remove the county’s maintenance responsibility for that roadway segment, staff said.
