Northern Lebanon SD directors consider starting school after Labor Day; athletics cited as concern

Director Klein told the board on Oct. 14 that community feedback favors beginning the school year after Labor Day. He said roughly 95% of comments he received were positive, with the principal complaint being that a later start can interfere with fall athletics practices and games if families take late-summer vacations.
Administration said the district now uses hours instead of a fixed-day count, which permits a Labor Day start while still ending the school year in early June. Director Klein said he had asked a staff member (referred to as "Gary" in the meeting) about planning; the administration said it will consult the leadership team and the teachers' calendaring committee before proposing a final calendar.
Board members and staff noted teachers and parents have previously expressed support for a post–Labor Day start. No vote was taken at the Oct. 14 meeting; the calendaring process includes committee review and further administrative planning.
