The Woodbury County Board of Supervisors proclaimed October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and received remarks from Safe Place, the local domestic violence advocacy organization.
Stephanie Pickenpaugh of Safe Place thanked the board and said, "Domestic violence touches every part of our county. Neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family." She urged residents to share resources, wear purple ribbons being distributed at the meeting and to speak out on behalf of survivors.
The proclamation text read on the record included statistics cited by Safe Place and in the proclamation: that domestic violence is widespread across races, ages and incomes; that "every 9 seconds, another person experiences this crime" (language read in the proclamation); and the statement that "1 in 3 women and 1 in 9 men will experience violence in their lifetime." The proclamation noted Safe Place provides 24‑hour services in the Siouxland area and said that last year Safe Place responded to over 1,500 victims, and that despite demand "no one in immediate danger was turned away," as stated in the proclamation language read at the meeting. The board recorded the proclamation identifying October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month for Woodbury County, Iowa, and urged citizens to participate in scheduled events and programs.
Stephanie Pickenpaugh presented purple ribbons at the meeting and thanked the board "on behalf of Safe Place and the survivors we serve."
