Community High School District 155 Director of Community Partnerships and Safety Justin Nabal told the Board of Education that the district has been awarded a $500,000 federal grant through the U.S. Department of Justice School Violence Prevention Program.
The funding is intended to support equipment, supplies and grant management services across district campuses, Nabal said, listing intercom replacements, added cameras and protective window film as examples of planned upgrades. Nabal told the board the district's share over three years is “just under $170,000,” which the administration plans to cover with budget contingencies.
The district will bring the award to the board for a formal acceptance vote at the November meeting, Nabal said; no acceptance action was taken at the October meeting. Superintendent Dr. Lisonbee praised Nabal’s persistence in pursuing the COPS grant process and noted the administration will present a detailed breakdown of work to be funded at the November committee meeting.
District officials said the grant will fund upgrades at all CHSD 155 campuses but that the precise scope-by-campus and the timeline for installations will be included in the November materials. Nabal said grant management services are included in the award; the administration did not identify the vendor for grant management services in the October presentation.
Next steps: the administration will provide a written award package and a line-item breakdown to the board at the November meeting and ask the board to vote to accept the grant and appropriate the local match from contingencies.
