Riverton Key Club students describe leadership weekend funded largely by Kiwanis

Key Club students and an advisor briefed the Fremont County School District #25 board on their recent Keyleader leadership weekend at the YMCA of the Rockies. Students described team-building exercises, facilitator roles and the value of the curriculum.
A student who served as a student facilitator described the experience as a “bigger challenge” than attending as a participant and said it required more training, patience and personal attention to participants. Another student described hands-on exercises including a ropes course and teamwork activities that helped peer bonding.
Key Club advisor (Kiwanis-affiliated) told the board the event cost about $22,000 to stage, that 72 students and eight facilitators attended, and that the Kiwanis Foundation subsidized most of the cost so students paid $50 each to attend. The advisor said meals and dorm lodging were provided by the YMCA and that organizers had already reserved the facility for future years. The advisor noted some competing local events reduced attendance and encouraged board members to consider visiting the event in future years to see the program.
The board thanked the students and advisor for the report and noted the program’s apparent benefits for student leadership development. No district funds were requested at the meeting for this trip; board materials noted a previous polling action (ratified) for a Key Club out-of-state travel request per policy concerning an Estes Park event earlier in the packet.
