Surveyor provides updates on local regulated-drain projects and planning considerations

At the Oct. 8 meeting, the Tippecanoe County Surveyor summarized progress on multiple regulated-drain projects and highlighted upcoming work and planning considerations.
The surveyor said the County Regulator Grant project north of Calvert on County Farm Road is about 98% complete and that the Elliott Stage ditch project (running from Ross Road at the Ivy Tech campus east to the east end of F Lake) is roughly 90–95% complete. The surveyor said Tippecanoe County is preparing a dredging project on the Tremco County regulated drain and plans a winter clearing project on the McLaughlin County regulated drain, which is a tri-county drain involving Tippecanoe, Montgomery, and Clinton counties; requests for quotes for that clearing went out recently.
The surveyor also said staff and consulting partners are working with the town of Audubon on a hydraulic and hydrology study of the Audubon County Regulated Drain watershed in anticipation of future expansions. He cited a branch of the Otterton Regulated Drain that currently runs beneath a large commercial building in Otterton and said the study is intended to help “rectify that situation.”
Looking ahead, the surveyor described additional phases on the Elliott County regulated drain downstream of the Ivy Tech phase, including a phase running from Ross Road to U.S. 52 and another from U.S. 52 around beneath Brady Lane and behind the county highway garage. He told the board that clearing trees as part of that work will open a view of the county highway garage from U.S. 52 and suggested the board consider the visual appearance; board members discussed possible fence upgrades and public art and suggested scheduling a field trip to view completed phases.
Board members asked for a status update on a long-running project along U.S. 52 that has been underway for years. The surveyor said progress had been slow but significant work has occurred; he said the project has not yet received the permit from the Indiana Department of Transportation and that the design has not been approved, but staff had asked estimating firms to update cost estimates and that he hoped for completion in 12 to 15 months, subject to permitting and landowner coordination.
There was no public comment on these informational items during the meeting.
