Batavia proclaims October 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Month; LivingWell honored

The Batavia City Council on Oct. 6 proclaimed October 2025 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and presented a framed proclamation to LivingWell Cancer Resource Center representatives.
Mayor Jeffrey D. Scheelke read the proclamation noting that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States and that LivingWell provides free programs including counseling, nutrition guidance, exercise and survivorship support. Erin O’Malley, Program and Outreach Coordinator for LivingWell, said the organization offers more than 100 free programs monthly and serves patients regardless of where they receive medical care. Joanne Hanson, a founder, noted LivingWell’s grassroots origins and thanked the council for the recognition.
The council adopted the proclamation by roll call, 13 yes, 0 no, 1 absent.
LivingWell outlined services that include fitness and nutrition programs, counseling, art and meditation therapies, therapeutic touch and survivorship programming. The nonprofit said it will host a 20th‑anniversary walk/5K on Oct. 11 and invited the community to participate. Staff said LivingWell became part of Northwestern Medicine in 2016.
The council framed the proclamation as an acknowledgement of community resources and encouraged residents to participate in events and education during the awareness month.
