Council approves ordinance allowing alternate members for city boards to ease quorum problems

The City Council approved an amendment to the city’s boards, committees and commissions rules to permit alternate members for boards and commissions. The ordinance allows any councilmember to nominate an alternate, subject to full council confirmation, provided there are no existing regular member vacancies for that board.
City Attorney Brandon Dyson said the measure formalizes a practice that previously applied only to the Zoning Board of Adjustment and will help boards maintain quorums and meet on schedule. "We’ve had some quorum issues, and we need to move to speed of business," the mayor said in support of the ordinance.
Council approved the ordinance on first reading and directed staff to solicit nominations and return appointments as necessary. The measure passed with a unanimous 7-0 vote.
