AACOG presents case for electric school buses and free 2026 technical assistance cohort

Lyle Hufstetler, who oversees the natural-resources program at the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG), visited the board Monday to make the case for electric school buses and to announce a free technical-assistance cohort planned for 2026.
Hufstetler said electric buses produce zero tailpipe emissions and can reduce student and driver exposure to diesel exhaust, which he described as linked to respiratory harms and decreased attention. He also said electric buses typically have lower total cost of ownership over their service life despite higher upfront purchase costs, and that AACOG will help districts find funding to offset initial capital expenses.
"There’s no pressure to participate. I'm just giving you information...we are organizing a cohort of school districts who have at least a slight interest in learning more about electric school buses," Hufstetler said, adding that the training would be free and tailored to each district's needs.
AACOG said it will contact the district’s transportation director to discuss the opportunity and will provide more details to any districts that express interest.
