South San Antonio ISD staff presented the annual Head Start report (grant 06CH012472) at the Oct. 20 board meeting, outlining program services, enrollment and health and family-support activities.
Head Start officials said the district has operated Head Start since 2012 and has served about 3,500 families since inception. The grant funds 288 student slots annually; last year the program served roughly 317 families because of student turnover and new enrollments. This year Head Start operates at four campuses: Benavides, Hutchins, Carrillo and Armstrong, with family facilitators assigned to each campus to support attendance and family needs.
The presentation highlighted comprehensive services: age-appropriate play-based instruction (Frog Street curriculum), health screenings and mobile health access (vaccinations, physicals), twice-yearly dental screenings, bus safety drills and social-emotional supports including classroom "cool down" corners and weekly yoga to help students self-regulate.
Staff described family-engagement activities such as parent classes (nutrition, financial literacy), fatherhood-initiative outings and partnerships that provide scholarships and other supports. Head Start administrators said the program meets the federal requirement that at least 10% of enrollment receive services for disabilities and that the program works with the district special-education team when evaluations are needed.
Board members asked about recruitment and retention of Head Start families and whether pre-K students remain in the district; Head Start staff said they will provide disaggregated data on how many Head Start students continue in district schools after pre-K. Staff said active monthly recruitment (flyers, community tables) begins in October and preregistration begins in February.
Head Start staff closed by noting the program’s focus on play-based early learning and family supports and invited trustees to follow up with questions and data requests.
