Richmond council donates retired tanker truck to Pele Fire Training for use at county academy

City Manager said the proposal from Pele Fire Training owner Steve Meyer would provide about $5,500 in services to the Richmond Volunteer Fire Department, including one free tuition for a Richmond firefighter through the St. Clair County Fire Academy through the 2028 academy year, initial department onboarding into the smoke system, evaluation of training records for the three-year compliance cycle ending Oct. 1, and one year of retained consulting to help the department meet Michigan Firefighter Training Council requirements. The city manager also said a rough estimate to move the truck to a training site was about $3,800.
The transfer drew support from council members and from Fire Chief Bridal. “He just taught a fire instructor class at our station that Assistant Chief Jelenich and Lieutenant Daubler took. So he’s already been a huge help,” Chief Bridal said, adding that Pele Fire Training had assisted at the department’s August training burn and previously taught many Richmond students.
A councilmember said the truck “can’t be used any longer for service runs,” and praised giving the vehicle more useful life through training. Council members were also told the city remains on schedule for delivery of a new tanker from Pierce, with a December delivery date still “online.”
A motion to approve the proposal from Pele Fire Training to receive the retired tanker in exchange for services valued at $5,500 passed. The council recorded no roll-call vote in the meeting transcript; the presiding officer declared the motion passed.
The transfer repurposes retired apparatus for training at the St. Clair County Fire Academy and relieves the city of maintaining an out-of-service apparatus while awaiting its new tanker’s delivery.
Next steps listed in the meeting record: staff will arrange transportation of the truck and final paperwork with Pele Fire Training; the city did not specify a final transfer date in the meeting record.
