Commission approves three‑year settlement with Police Command Officers Association

The Birmingham City Commission on Oct. 6 approved a settlement agreement with the Birmingham Police Command Officers Association, the union representing seven full‑time captains and lieutenants in the police department.

The settlement includes wage adjustments of 3.5% for the current year, 4% the following year and 3.5% in the third year; an optional employer contribution of up to 5% to employee 401(a) retirement accounts; increases to long‑term disability and life insurance coverage; addition of Juneteenth as a holiday and an extra personal day for vacation accrual calculations; a $25 increase in holiday premium pay for working certain holidays; a $150 increase to the annual uniform allowance; language changes for Earned Sick Time Act compliance; and waiving the short‑term disability waiting period for childbirth recovery.

Staff estimated the current fiscal‑year impact at about $74,000 and said the amount had been budgeted in the wage adjustment account. Commissioners asked whether later years’ impacts would be similar; staff said yes. A motion to adopt the resolution approving the settlement and to authorize transfer of funds from the wage adjustment account passed by roll call vote.
