Orlando presents conceptual design, timeline and funding plan for permanent Pulse memorial

Orlando City officials and a committee of survivors, family members and community volunteers on Feb. 24 presented a conceptual design and next steps to build a permanent memorial on the former Pulse nightclub site, the city said at a council workshop. City staff said they will produce a design-control document and an RFP package within 90 days, and city leaders identified $7.5 million in general-fund money for design and initial construction while seeking state and private support.

The proposal, developed by an 18-member committee selected from about 150 applicants, centers on a main memorial area with a reflecting pool, a wall with water to buffer sound from Orange Avenue, and an “elipse of angels” — a line of 49 columns intended to represent each person killed in the June 12, 2016, mass shooting. The conceptual package also includes a renovated visitor pavilion for interpretation and indoor space, planting for shade, nighttime lighting, security cameras, and areas intended for family gatherings and private contemplation.
