Downtown upgrades and working waterfront repairs move forward, mayor says

At the State of the City Expo, Mayor Sherry Sullivan highlighted downtown and waterfront projects completed in 2024 and work scheduled for 2025.
Sullivan said 2024 saw completion of Arts Alley, funded by the Federal Highway program and the Eastern Shore MPO, which functions as a downtown transit hub with a restroom facility and improved lighting. She described a downtown shuttle that serves Arts Alley and runs Monday through Saturday to reduce circling traffic in downtown Fairhope.
On the working waterfront, the mayor said the city has already completed seawall repairs on the north side and will move to the south side. Sullivan listed upgrades including reconfigured fountains, new sidewalks, new stairs, new pier handrails and lighting, new benches and trash cans, fish-cleaning stations and renovated pier restrooms. She said restroom facilities at the Pier Street boat ramp will return once a force main is tied in and the relevant lift station is online.
Sullivan also referenced Gaston Plaza, improvements on Church Street and additional sidewalk work slated across downtown and near the bluff. She said seawall repair was one of the project's most expensive elements and called the work necessary for public safety and access.
