Subcommittee reviews discretionary grants across health and human services agencies
Summary
The subcommittee reviewed six Department of Health discretionary grants and several Department of Human Services grants covering community health workers, cancer coalition work, suicide-prevention training and behavioral health recovery services; members voted to review the package.
The ALC Review Subcommittee reviewed discretionary grant awards submitted for committee review and voted to accept the grants for review.
Katie Walden summarized six Department of Health grants: a state grant through the Minority Health Commission to Arkansas Human Development Corp. for Hispanic/Latino health fairs and outreach; a $100,000 state grant for community health workers; a federal grant to the Arkansas Cancer Coalition for implementation of the state cancer plan; a federal grant for critical access hospitals and provider-based rural clinics administered with Stroud Water Associates; a $225,000 federal grant with Philander Smith University for peer recovery support services in higher education; and a $200,000 federal grant to the NWA Scribe Intervention Center for evidence-based suicide prevention training.
Walden also presented two Department of Human Services grants: a $342,000 federal grant to Bridging the Gap of Arkansas for substance-misuse prevention and mental-health services through the partnership-for-success program, and a $1,000,000 federal grant to Family Centered Treatment Foundation for intensive in-home services for families in addiction recovery. Walden noted a tobacco-prevention and cessation contract previously approved that was resubmitted with a new vendor, Arts Absolutely, as a $67,000 grant funded by Master Settlement Agreement dollars for youth tobacco prevention.
Representative Latham and other members asked no substantive follow-ups; the committee moved and approved review of C1–C4 discretionary grants on a voice vote.
