Wilson County staff presented plans Sept. 22 to reinstate employee ID badging and a countywide mass notification system that sends email and text alerts to employees during closures or emergency incidents.
Staff said badges will help identify county employees during crises and for access control. The county plans standard ID badges for all employees and HID access cards for positions needing secure access; HID badges were described as more costly (about $8 each for replacements). The presenter said HR will circulate a registration link so employees can upload photos for badges and that personnel who work in the field and lack computer access will be accommodated by office staff taking cell‑phone photos.
County staff also described an existing mass notification platform used previously for nearly two decades. The system can send a single text and email to all registered county employees for weather closures, facility lockdowns or EOC activations. Staff emphasized that employees should register a phone number they actually carry so they will receive real‑time alerts.
Commissioners asked about replacement‑badge costs, whether employees should be charged for lost HID access cards, and how the registration and photo process will work for field crews. Staff said the policy will be updated with those details and that HR and county IT will coordinate on implementation.
No formal vote to adopt a final badging policy was recorded; staff will send a policy draft and registration instructions to departments for implementation.
