James Sullivan, president of the Boys & Girls Club serving the district’s Tuck Club site, addressed the Harrison School District 2 board May 15 to remind trustees of the club’s after‑school and youth programming and to invite a board visit.
Sullivan stressed the organization’s low cost to families ($2 per day for the nonprofit‑run program described as separate from a for‑profit kids‑club daycare) and the club’s role in youth development, training and safety checks for staff. He said the club runs programs for children ages 6–18 and highlighted offerings such as drone programming, arts, homework assistance and outdoor opportunities.
Youth testimony
Nicholas Barnett, introduced as the club’s 2025 Youth of the Year, addressed the board and recited a short speech and a poem. Barnett said he initially hesitated to join the club but became a leader and role model through activities including snowboarding, 3‑D printing and a drone soccer program. He described the club staff as mentors who held him accountable when academic responsibilities lapsed and credited the club with helping him regain academic standing and leadership roles.
Why this matters: Community partners such as the Boys & Girls Club provide after‑school enrichment and mentoring that the district and community rely on for youth development. Sullivan’s invitation for a board tour underscores ongoing collaboration between the nonprofit and the school system.
