Workers, contractor mark topping out of new Marion Oaks elementary school

Dr. Gillette noted the district has not built a school in a long time: "We actually haven't built a school since the first iPhone was released," he said.
Miss Mumbach and district staff described unexpected site conditions that delayed the start of work at this location. She said the site required additional work because of "tortoises that are protected" and tree removal; those issues led to about a two-month delay before construction could begin. "These workers and crews have come together to work hard and get it back on a time schedule because of those unexpected delays," she said.
At the event crews were recognized and provided lunch; organizers also displayed promotional items such as large televisions and coolers. Dr. Gillette said the district will share photos from the celebration and follow up with the community on the project's progress.
The district did not provide a specific completion date, budget figures, or additional contract details during the remarks. Funding sources and contract amounts were not specified in the event remarks.
District representatives said the topping out is a milestone for the school system and for local workers who contributed to the project.
