Bicycle Advisory Committee reports AARP grant audits and urges support for Verde Connection

The regional Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) presented audit findings, community observations and next steps during the Clarkdale Town Council meeting on May 13. BAC members said they solicited volunteer auditors, completed 13 audit locations across Cottonwood and Clarkdale under two AARP Community Challenge grants and found most cyclists are adults using bikes for both recreation and basic transportation.
The BAC identified two Clarkdale corridors for attention: Laney Lane and Old Jerome Highway. Committee members described Laney Lane as an important low-traffic corridor that could be included in future Verde Connection alignments and said the roundabout near Cement Plant Road presents a connection challenge that could benefit from markings, signage or 'green paint' bike markings common in other towns.
BAC presenters emphasized helmet-safety outreach and education for both cyclists and motorists and offered continued support for town predesign and transportation planning. The committee asked the council for a letter of support for an outstanding grant application related to Broadway; council members indicated willingness to provide support if requested.
Ending: BAC volunteers and county public-health staff said they remain available to advise on future phases of the Verde Connection, education campaigns and design reviews.
