Scouting America volunteers highlight decades of Eagle projects and local service

Susan Kimball, San Gabriel Valley district commissioner, said the national organization now operates co‑ed programs under the Scouting America name and described scouting’s mission and range of merit‑badge opportunities. She emphasized leadership and character development alongside outdoor skills.
Volunteer speakers described many recent Eagle projects that improved trails and facilities in Big Dalton Canyon — rock walls, trail bridges, benches, signage and a drinking fountain at day camp — and projects at South Hills Park and local schools, including the Spartan Garden at Sandburg Middle School, tennis‑locker work at Glendora High and improvements to athletic fields at Sandburg and Goddard. Volunteers credited decades of scout labor for trail infrastructure and school facility improvements.
Speakers said membership and pack numbers dropped after COVID and that bolstering packs (kindergarten–fifth grade units) is critical to building troops that later do Eagle projects. They invited community members to serve on Eagle project boards and to help with recruitment and outreach. No formal action was taken.
