Idaho sugar industry tells committee labor, DEQ permitting and legal protections are top priorities

Industry representatives told the Idaho House Agriculture Affairs Committee that the state’s sugar‑beet sector remains a major economic contributor and needs help on three fronts: worker recruitment and retention, faster environmental permitting, and legal protections for companies that comply with labeling laws.

Zach Patterson, president of the Snake River Sugar Beet Growers Association, told the committee he appreciated legislators’ work to "keep Idaho an ag friendly state," and emphasized labor as the industry’s top concern. "Labor's been the number 1 issue," Patterson said, noting the sector’s reliance on seasonal and longer‑term farm workers and existing federal visa programs.

The committee also heard from Christina Hardesty, vice president, general counsel and secretary of Amalgamated Sugar Company, who described the industry’s size and priorities. "We are a cooperative owned by 700 sugar beet farmers in Idaho, Oregon and Washington," Hardesty said. She told lawmakers Amalgamated contributes "over $1,000,000,000 annually to the Idaho economy" and highlighted byproducts used as cattle feed and de‑icers.
