Idaho Museum of Natural History seeks operating funds to sustain new mobile museum program

The Joint Finance Committee heard from the Idaho Museum of Natural History about a new mobile museum initiative and a FY2026 request for partial state funding to sustain operations after a time‑limited private foundation grant expires.

Kevin Campbell, Legislative Services Office analyst, summarized the museum’s request and said the museum has 8.2 authorized FTE and typically spends all of its appropriation. Museum Director Leif Tapanilla told the committee the museum secured a three‑year, $180,000 grant from the David B. Jones Foundation to purchase a van and to fund two years of a part‑time educator; the grant’s first year supports the purchase of the vehicle and subsequent years fund educator time.

Tapanilla described the plan for the mobile museum to travel approximately 6,000 miles annually to schools and libraries, with a particular focus on rural Idaho, and said the museum asks the legislature for partial operating support to cover material and ongoing costs once the grant term ends. He said the mobile program seeks to reach every county on a two‑ to three‑year cycle.

Senators and representatives asked how the museum measures program impact beyond headcounts. Director Tapanilla acknowledged that counting visitors is straightforward but said qualitative impacts—such as education outcomes and long‑term student engagement—are harder to quantify; he offered to provide metrics and evaluation approaches to the committee.
