Representative Josh Wheeler, who represents District 35, presented RS31958, a sudden cardiac arrest awareness measure aimed at school districts.
"This bill will basically ask our school districts to implement policies to make parents and coaches aware of symptoms and results of sudden cardiac arrest in student athletes," Representative Josh Wheeler said, noting sudden cardiac arrest is among the leading causes of death in student athletes.
Wheeler told the committee the measure is budget neutral because the materials and training modules the districts would use already exist online and can be tailored to local needs. "This bill is budget neutral because the resources that the school districts are being asked to make use of already exist," he said.
Representative Redmond moved to introduce RS31958 for printing; the committee voted in favor and the motion passed. No opposition was recorded on the transcript.
The RS as introduced asks districts to adopt awareness policies and to use available training and materials; no specific training vendor, additional funding, or mandate to purchase equipment (for example, automated external defibrillators) was specified in the RS as presented.
