City Clerk Vanessa Joseph said the city formally co-named a portion of 130 First Street, from Northeast Second Avenue to Northwest Seventh Avenue, as Councilman Jacques Despeneaux Street and also co-named Bree Sweat Park in his honor.
Joseph said the council recognized Pride Month and noted its history dating to the Stonewall riots of June 28, 1969. Joseph also noted May observances for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month.
Joseph said the council adopted a resolution recognizing Juneteenth as a city holiday and supporting citywide celebration and awareness. She said Dr. Gwen West hosts an annual Juneteenth Festival at Griffin Park; Joseph provided two phone numbers for more information and said the event is free and open to the community.
Joseph presented the co-naming and recognitions as official actions in her summary; the transcript did not include vote tallies, motion text or ordinance/resolution numbers in her remarks.
