The House Commerce Committee on May 27 advanced three separate measures by voice vote: a concurrent resolution to reestablish the Louisiana‑Ireland Trade Commission, a concurrent resolution creating a task force to study fraud committed against elderly Louisianans, and a concurrent resolution directing a study of a potential merger of the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission and the Louisiana Used Motor Vehicle Commission.
Senate Concurrent Resolution 21 would reestablish Louisiana’s trade commission with Ireland; sponsors said the commission facilitates business connections and industry ties and the measure adds representatives from the restaurant and oil and gas industries. Senator Mizell and a representative of the World Trade Center said the initiative has produced private‑sector engagement and could support efforts such as airline service and trade relationships.
House Concurrent Resolution 53, carried by Representative Carver, would create a task force to study the occurrence and effect of fraud committed against elderly Louisianans. Latonya Scott, communications director for AARP Louisiana and leader of statewide fraud outreach, told the committee that fraud and identity theft continue to cost Louisianans substantial sums and that older adults are disproportionately targeted. The resolution was amended to require the task force report its findings to both the House and Senate Commerce Committees.
House Concurrent Resolution 69 would create a task force to study whether to merge the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission and the Louisiana Used Motor Vehicle Commission. Representative Carver offered and the committee adopted an amendment changing membership language so the task force would solicit operational input from each commission’s executive directors while appointing commissioners from both bodies to the study group. Witnesses and members said the commissions have overlapping authorities in some areas and that a study could identify administrative efficiencies and best practices.
All three measures were reported favorably from committee by voice vote.
