The Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee voted Wednesday to adopt a $6.4 billion general fund revenue estimate for fiscal year 2026, the recommendation of the legislature’s Economic Outlook and Revenue Assessment Committee.
Committee staff presented the recommendation and compared it to the governor’s median projection and the committee’s median; staff said collections to date were running slightly behind forecast but that the largest revenue months remain ahead. A motion to adopt the Economic Outlook Committee’s recommended $6.4 billion figure passed on a roll call showing 16 ayes, 2 nays and 2 members absent or excused; the committee chair announced the measure will move forward under that number.
Senator Janie Ward Engleking told the committee she would vote no and explained her view that the legislature should set a revenue projection earlier in the process. “I will be voting no on this because I think this is the wrong way to do our budgets,” she said, adding that she prefers a revenue number established before tax or spending decisions are advanced. Other members supporting the motion said the figure was reasonable and reflected growth in general fund revenues compared with the prior year.
Committee staff advised members that April and June remain large revenue months and that final collections could change the fiscal picture; the committee moved on after adopting the revenue baseline.
