Committee converts school-safety alert pilot into statewide grant program

NASHVILLE — The House Education Committee advanced House Bill 505, which converts last year’s Alyssa’s Law pilot school-safety alert grant into a statewide two-year program and creates a dedicated school safety alert grant fund.
Sponsor Leader Gantt said the proposal removes a cap on the number of grants that may be awarded and establishes a fund within the general fund to receive appropriations for the program. He said the bill anticipates an appropriation of roughly $750,000 for the grant fund and noted the governor’s broader school safety request in the budget.
‘‘We convert the school safety alert grant pilot program to a statewide two-year safety alert grant program,’’ Gantt said, and explained the separate fund would protect the program’s resources.
The committee approved the bill and its traveling amendment on a unanimous vote (18–0); the measure moves to Government Operations.
What’s next: HB 505 advances to Government Operations; sponsors said further appropriation decisions will be part of the budget process.
