NASHVILLE — The House Education Committee unanimously advanced House Bill 764, a bill that would require the State Department of Education to provide training for school administrators and staff who conduct searches of students.
Representative (sponsor) told the committee the bill stems from concerns raised after a search incident in the sponsor’s district and is designed to protect students’ Fourteenth Amendment rights while allowing staff to act on reasonable suspicion.
The sponsor said the sheriff’s association and the Department of Education assisted in drafting the amendment adopted in committee; the committee approved the bill 18–0 and sent it to calendar and rules.
