Committee clears bill allowing local districts to enroll additional pre-K students when seats remain

NASHVILLE — The House Education Committee unanimously advanced House Bill 6, a measure that would permit local school districts to enroll additional students in voluntary prekindergarten programs when the number of at-risk students does not meet maximum class size thresholds.
Representative Hale, the bill sponsor, said the change would help districts recruit teachers and make efficient use of available classroom seats. ‘‘Having been a director and understanding trying to hire teachers and stuff, she said this bill will help districts recruit teachers,’’ Hale said, recounting feedback from a director of schools.
The committee recorded 17 ayes and no nays, with one member present but not voting. The bill moves to the calendar and rules.
What’s next: HB 6 advances to the calendar and rules for possible floor consideration.
